Edward G Robinson in a television episode of Zane Grey Theatre.
The good looking young man with him is his son, Edward Jr, known as Manny, born in 1933.
Looks wise the apple fell far from the tree. Manny was tall and handsome in a movie star way while his father was short and not in the least handsome.
There were other differences as well. Edward Sr. was an immigrant who knew the value of hard work and diligence. His son was a playboy and petty criminal.
Manny had numerous acting roles but never made it as an actor. He began drinking heavily as a teenager and was arrested for DUI a number of times. Passing dud cheques was also a habit. Spoiled, he would physically attack anyone he took an umbrage to.
He eloped at 19, fathered a child with his wife, and then promptly divorced her. His father was appalled by his behaviour and threatened to cut him off financially. It seemed to be an empty threat.
Either hard living or a congenital heart defect led to a fatal heart attack aged only 40. He had survived his father by just over a year.Arrested for writing a bad cheque in 1952 his father bailed him out for $10,000. Here his second wife was waiting for him as he was released. He would be married three times and had at least one child out of wedlock.1957. Another day, another visit to the court. Edward Sr weeps as his son is sentenced to 60 days in jail for misdemeanour drunk driving. I believe the lady next to him is, Gladys, the mother of Manny who is also weeping. She and Edward Sr. had divorced the year before.
