The woman in this photo is Phoolan Mallah, originally from India.

She was born in 1963 into a poor family and was married at the age of 11 to a man three times her age.

Phoolan could not accept this early marriage, let alone with a man her own age. This situation led to her husband abusing her. Unable to endure the rapes, she ran away to her family one day. But she received no help. Her parents considered it shameful that the family supported her decision, so they sent her back to her husband.

One day she ran away again.

According to testimonies, at that time she was discovered by a gang of bandits because of her temperament and difficult character.

They kidnapped her and took her as the only female member of the gang. Later, one of the gangsters fell in love with her and they began a relationship. She later returned home to punish her rapist. Although she didn't kill him, she inflicted serious injuries on him.

But one faction of the gang did not tolerate Phoolan's relationship with the other member because she came from a lower caste.

This led to a shootout between the two factions. Phoolan's group lost the battle, and her lover was killed. The victorious gang, consisting of 22 men, abused her for approximately two weeks before escaping.

After her escape, she joined the survivors of her ex-boyfriend's faction. Within a few months, her gang grew stronger and attacked the other faction in the village of Behmai. Her gang killed all 22 rapists. This event is known in Indian crime history as the 1981 Behmai Massacre.

Later, she and her gang committed crimes that many considered morally legitimate.

Her acts of revenge were reported by the press as a salutary act of rebellion. The media nicknamed her "Devi." Phoolan was known by this name throughout India at that time and is still considered a legend by many.

But legally, she was a bandit and a criminal. She therefore faced legal action. She evaded arrest for two years before surrendering in 1983.
