Clara Belle Drisdale Williams (1885-1993) was the first African American graduate of New Mexico State University.
Many of her teachers wouldn't let her into the classroom because her skin was black; she had to take notes from the hallway so as not to make her teachers uncomfortable.
On his graduation day, he was not allowed to walk with his classmates to receive his diploma.
Clara married and had three children who later became doctors. She was a great teacher. By day she taught Black students, and by night she taught their parents and the freed slaves.
In 1980, she was awarded a law degree by NMSU, which apologized to her for the treatment she received when she was a student…..
