Helga Goebbels, the daughter of Hitler's Propaganda Minister, Joseph Goebbels, tragically did not survive the war.

In April 1945, the Nazi regime collapsed.

Hitler retreated to his bunker beneath the Reich Chancellery building in Berlin. During this time, many top Nazi officials sent their wives and children to safer locations. However, Magda Goebbels (Joseph's wife and Helga's mother) had insisted on joining her husband when he committed suicide alongside the Führer. This in itself was disturbing, showing how fanatically loyal one can be to a cause, but it was even more disturbing when she brought her six children with her: Helga (12), Hilde (11), Helmut (10), Holde (9), Hedwig (7), and Heidrun (4).

Before April 1945, Joseph Goebbels had tried to persuade Magda to leave with the children for safety on numerous occasions. Curt Reiss's book, along with many other biographies of Goebbels, identifies this fact. He suggested that his wife leave with the children for a neutral zone. Magda refused. Later, he also suggested that Magda should consider surrendering with the children to the British, on the condition that they would not harm her or the children. Once again, she refused. Throughout their time in the bunker, they both received repeated offers to take the children to safety. On every occasion, they refused.

In the end, both Magda and Joseph inevitably planned to have an SS dentist inject the children with morphine to make them sleep. While they slept, she went ahead and squirted cyanide into their mouths. Five of them died instantly, except for the eldest, Helga. When the Russians found the children's bodies in the bunker, Helga had bruises and marks all over her face, and her jaw appeared to be broken. It has been speculated that Helga must have woken up from the morphine and fought off her killer, who was her own mother.

According to most accounts, the children were murdered because their parents could not bear to see them grow up in a world without National Socialism or Hitler. Joseph had cited this in his final political testament, while Magda made this decision quite clear in her final letter to her eldest son, Harald. The threat of the Russians also had to be considered.

The Russians were surrounding Berlin from all sides and raping as many girls and women as they could. The Goebbels family had fivedaughters, some as young as twelve. It is possible that if the Russians had found them, they would have done the same to the girls. However, the bottom line is that the parents, particularly Magda, had enough time to get the children to safety before such circumstances arose. Their children, like any other descendants of high-ranking Nazis, would likely have lived long lives.
