Rebecca Lee Crumpler was the first Black woman to become a doctor of medicine in the United States.
Rebecca Crumpler worked as a nurse in Charlestown, Massachusetts, for eight years after relocating there in 1852. She didn't need any formal training for the position because there were no recognized nursing schools at the time. She was, however, unafraid of some hard effort. She received her M.D. after being accepted into the New England Female Medical College in 1860.
Dr. Crumpler relocated to Richmond, Virginia, following the end of the Civil War in 1865 to offer healthcare for the newly liberated slaves who had nowhere else to turn. She devoted her life to learning about illnesses that disproportionately affected women and children, and although she eventually settled back in Massachusetts, she established her own clinic there. Regardless of their ability to pay her, she helped individuals who were in poverty.. she deserve to remain In our memories.
