Michael Clarke Duncan dug hundreds of graves in the streets of CHICAGO.
He was enormous and powerful enough to scare at first sight, yet painfully shy. His mother, who raised him alone, always told him, "Your size is a gift; that is your true strength."
For years he worked at the entrances of nightclubs and as a bodyguard for celebrities. He protected the bodies of the famous while dreaming of touching souls on the big screen. He was advised to go to Hollywood with a few recommendations from his clients. He gathered courage and decided to try.
But no one believed in him—"too big," "too handsome," others would say. Until one day, by pure chance, Bruce Willis saw him crying—not acting, not a set rehearsal, but raw reality.
In that moment, Bruce Willis decided to christen him as John Coffey. The gentle giant who looked like a monster, he wanted to help him. And so he achieved great success, as we have all appreciated in his films.
When he passed away in 2012, the world mourned his loss.
