“Here’s something you need to know. James Brown wasn’t created in a studio by some music promoter, like a lot of music groups today. James Brown came from struggle—he performed because he had to. He didn’t start dancing just for fun. He danced to earn nickels and dimes from soldiers watching him. That’s how he survived. He grew up with nothing.”
James Brown was known for being super focused when it came to his work. He was always writing, recording, touring, and performing—six nights a week. And he expected that same level of effort from everyone who worked with him, from his dancers to the guy playing the drums. He would even fine his bandmates if they hit the wrong note or if their shoes weren’t shiny.
He was stubborn and wanted everything perfect. The people around him were always professional and, honestly, kind of quiet and careful around him. Everyone called him “Mr. Brown” or “Mr. James Brown.” Never just “James.” That was the respect he earned—and gave back. He called everyone “Mister” too.
