In 1942 everything changed.
In Brussels a teacher named Andrée Geulen saw her students come to class wearing the yellow star. The star showed they were Jewish and made them targets. She could not accept it. She told every student to wear an apron to hide the stars. It was a small act but it was very dangerous.
Soon she became part of the Jewish Defense Committee. Her regular teaching job was a disguise. Underneath she did tough and scary work. She asked parents to give her their children so they could stay safe. She took the children to new homes one by one always scared of being found out. Even her own school hid Jewish children while the Nazis looked everywhere.
Then there was May of 1943. Soldiers stormed the school. They arrested her. One of the soldiers attempted to test her and she responded fearlessly. Aren't you ashamed you're warring against Jewish children. By good fortune she managed an escape.
Then she went underground. She was always on the lookout for and safeguarding children. When the war ended nearly one thousand Jewish children survived because of her courage.
