Revenge at Birkenau
This is more than just a story—it is believed to be true. A woman at Birkenau killed a Nazi guard while she was being forced to take off her clothes on the way to the gas chambers. But who was she?

For months, young Jewish women like Ester Wajcblum, Ella Gärtner, and Regina Safirsztain secretly took tiny bits of gunpowder from a weapons factory inside Auschwitz. They gave it to Róza Robota, another prisoner working in the camp. Even with guards watching, they hid the gunpowder in small cloth or paper packages and carefully passed it on. Róza then gave it to a secret group called the Sonderkommando—prisoners forced to work in the crematoria. Their plan was to use the gunpowder to blow up the gas chambers and start a fight.

On October 7, 1944, when the prisoners found out many of them were going to be killed, the Sonderkommando at Crematorium IV fought back. The Germans quickly stopped the rebellion. About 250 prisoners died in the fight, and another 200 were killed later.

A few days after, the SS learned that four Jewish women had helped by giving explosives. They were caught and killed. But their courage is still a strong symbol of fighting back against the terrible things at Auschwitz.

 She was born into slavery in Tennessee, but during the Civil War she managed to escape and found her way to 23rd Indiana Infantry Regiment which was encamped nearby. She stayed with the regiment and worked as a nurse throughout the war. After the war, she moved north with the regiment and settled in Indiana, where she found work with some of the veterans of the 23rd. She applied for a pension after Congress passed the Army Nurses Pension Act of 1892 which allowed Civil War nurses to draw pensions for their service. The War Department had no record of her, so her pension was denied. Fifty-five surviving veterans of the 23rd petitioned Congress for the pension they felt she had rightfully earned, and it was granted. The photograph shows Nichols and other veterans of the Indiana regiment at a reunion in 1898. She died in 1915 and is buried in a cemetery in New Albany, Indiana.

 She was put on trial for killing her white employer, Earnest Knight, who she said tried to rape her. Lena claimed she killed him in self-defense, but an all-white, all-male jury convicted her, and she was sentenced to death. Her trial lasted only one day. Before she was executed, sitting in the electric chair, she said: “What I done, I did in self defense or I would’ve been killed myself. Where I was, I could not overcome it. I am ready to meet my God.” Lena was executed on March 5, 1945. She was the only woman ever executed in Georgia. She left behind three children. Her last words, along with her picture, are now displayed near the electric chair at a museum in Georgia State Prison in Reidsville.

 After World War II, some SS soldiers were tried and either executed or imprisoned, while others escaped or were let go. After the Waffen-SS killed American prisoners of war in 1944, American troops were told to shoot any SS members they saw, even if they tried to surrender.The Allies learned that the SS was targeting Jews and advised Jewish soldiers to change the religion on their dog tags or take them off.  The German army entered the war in 1939 in high-quality uniforms of thick wool and with a dark-green collar. The leadership spent a lot to ensure that the soldiers appeared shiny and professional with a victory likely to come fast.It was different in 1941 when the invasion of Russia took place. The military was not well prepared to the extreme cold. Guy Sajer in his memoirs describes how the men were forced to wrap their feet in straw or steal clothes off the conquered men just to get by.
