Camps were dangerous with dogs yet that was not the central object of fear in the camps. Much bigger threats.

The guards and their helpers were the greatest afraid of. They were quite inhumane as they would beat up, hurt and or kill prisoners without cause. Inmates did not know what a guard could do next.

It was another source of fear to die of hunger or illness. Food rations were restricted to prison inmates and the conditions of life were filthy and unsafe. A lot of them starved or fell seriously ill.

The slave labor was also frightening. Prisoners underwent insane labour, long hours of hard tasks aimed to ruin their bodies and soul. A lot feared that they would be worked to death.

The scariest part in the worst camps was the “selection” where the guards decided which of them would survive and which of them will die immediately. This may come on, without any warning.

Therefore, in as much as dogs were dangerous, they were not the only method of controlling prisoners. The true horror was the sadistic guards, the starvation and illness, the labor strenuity and the ever looming menace of being gassed in the gas chambers.
